ABOUT GLOBALIZATION AND THIS BLOG

So why globalization? What does this even mean?

Well, globalization has been a slow coming phenomenon. Since the dawn of civilization people have been migrating, dispersing, and conquering new lands. Trading posts like the Silk Road running between Asia and Europe now seem menial in comparison to the grand scale of transportation and logistics we have interconnecting nearly every inch of the planet. But everything before now has lead us to the biggest information, technology, and creation boom since the Renaissance.

This burst of information and transportation technology has enabled people from all around the globe to communicate, interact, and trade like never before. We are living in an extraordinary time: where we can click a few buttons and buy a plane ticket to where ever your heart desires, Skype or instant message someone half way around the world, or order a t-shirt from Europe and have it on your doorstep in the USA within 48 hours. But globalization stretches deeper into the fabrics of our society than the economic sector.

Step off your jet and into nearly any major airport around the globe and you cannot tell if you are in London or China. The architecture, signs, stores, and restaurants are all remarkably similar, but mostly the same from place to place. Any major shopping mall or establishment these days all carry Louis Vuitton, Coach, or Zara. These similarities, these reoccurring themes around the globe are all due to globalization.

But the most interesting thing about globalization and the reoccurring themes around the globe is the hybridization of these global phenomenon's. Chinese food in the USA is much different than the chinese food in Africa, South America, and even Asia. The way people are taking on, adapting, rejecting, and accepting globalization of other cultures, products, and foods is fascinating and ever changing.

And this is why I am so interested in globalization--- because we are in the midst of it all! We are living in an incredible chapter of human development, and I want to be an aware citizen. Questioning, exploring, and diving into the ongoing conversation. In reality, globalization has become such a seamless part of our lives that we often forget to question it, and examine how it is effecting and changing our lives, technology, economies, and cultures.
